Frequently Asked Questions

Is Experian Boost really free, or does it lead to a paid upsell?

It's genuinely free with no subscription required, you can sign up for a free basic Experian account specifically to use Boost without ever being charged. It only requires having at least one existing credit account to enroll.

Does Experian Boost improve my credit score everywhere, or just with Experian?

Only your Experian-based FICO and VantageScore results. It has no effect on the score TransUnion or Equifax generate, so a lender pulling a score from either of those bureaus won't see any change from using Boost.

How do I cancel a paid Experian subscription without getting charged again?

If you subscribed directly on Experian's site, you can cancel through your account settings, but customer service by phone is sometimes the more reliable route for premium plans. If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, Experian can't process that cancellation, you have to cancel through that app store's own subscription settings instead.

What happens if I don't cancel my 7-day free trial in time?

You're billed $24.99 for Premium or $34.99 for the Family Plan the day the trial ends, and the subscription continues monthly from there. There's no grace period after the 7 days closes.

Can using Experian Boost ever lower my score?

No, Boost only adds positive, on-time payment history, it doesn't factor in late or missed payments from the accounts you connect. If your score doesn't move or briefly changes for an unrelated reason, disconnecting the linked accounts reverts your file to how it was before.

Is the free Basic plan actually useful, or just a limited teaser for the paid plans?

It gives real, ongoing value on its own, your Experian credit report and monitoring with no time limit and no payment required, it's just narrower in scope than Premium, without dark web monitoring, the fraud resolution team, or identity theft insurance.

Saving Guide

Start with Experian Boost before considering a paid plan.

Since it costs nothing and only requires a free account, it's worth doing regardless of whether you eventually subscribe to a paid tier, there's no scenario where trying it costs you anything.

Use the 7-day trial deliberately, with a reminder set before day 7.

Since the trial requires a credit card upfront and converts to a full charge automatically, treat day 6 as your real deadline rather than day 7, giving yourself a buffer against time zone or billing-cycle timing issues.

Choose the Family Plan the moment a second household member needs coverage.

At $34.99/month for up to 2 adults and 10 children, it becomes cheaper than two separate $24.99 Premium subscriptions as soon as more than one adult in the household wants monitoring, rather than paying for duplicate individual plans.

Cancel through the original signup channel, not through Experian directly, if you subscribed via an app store.

Attempting to cancel an Apple or Google Play subscription through Experian's own site or customer service won't work, going straight to your phone's subscription settings is the only path that actually stops the billing.

Shopping Guide

Decide between Basic and Premium based on whether you need three-bureau reporting, not just "more features."

The free Basic plan only monitors your Experian file, if you specifically need visibility into your TransUnion or Equifax reports too, that three-bureau coverage is one of the clearest reasons to pay for Premium rather than defaulting to it for general peace of mind.

Check which bureau your lender actually uses before assuming Experian Boost will help your application.

Since Boost only affects Experian-based scores, connecting your accounts won't matter at all if the lender you're applying with pulls a TransUnion or Equifax score instead, worth asking the lender directly before relying on Boost to help with a specific application.

For a growing family, compare the Family Plan's child coverage against what you'd actually need.

Since it covers up to 10 children under one subscription regardless of how many you actually have, a household with just one or two kids is still paying the same $34.99 as a household using the full 10-child allowance, so weigh that against simply extending Basic monitoring to older children who might not need full identity theft insurance yet.
