Join Gold+ for free and you'll earn one point per dollar spent on the base rate. Free rental days start at 950 points.

How old do I need to be to rent from Hertz?

The minimum age is 20 at most U.S. locations, 18 in Michigan, New York, and Quebec, and 19 in Alabama and Nebraska. Renters under 25 pay a young renter fee and can't book the Dream Car, Prestige, or Adrenaline collections.

Can I pick up my car at one location and drop it off at another?

Yes. Hertz offers one-way rentals, so you can return the vehicle to a different location than where you picked it up.

What happens if I don't return the car with a full tank?

You'll be charged a refueling service fee, unless you prepaid for fuel through the Fuel Purchase Option at pickup.

Will I be charged if I cancel my reservation?

Only if you prepaid. Pay Later reservations, which don't require payment details up front, can be cancelled without a fee.

Changing the rental duration after booking can alter the charge. Use realistic times from the start, including the branch's opening hours and the time needed to return the vehicle.

Inspect before driving away:

Photograph the vehicle, odometer, and fuel level at pickup. Repeat the record at return and keep the final receipt so an unexpected charge is easier to question.

For an electric rental, confirm charging near the accommodation and along the route, then allow time for charging before return.

Compare pickup trucks, cargo vans, and box trucks by load size, access height, and driving conditions rather than choosing by exterior size alone.

Hertz can record needs such as left-hand controls, right-hand controls, steering-wheel spinner knobs, and assistance for visual or physical disabilities. Confirm availability before the rental date.

Pickup and Delivery Options

  • Airport locations may provide terminal, counter, or shuttle-based pickup, depending on the airport.
  • Neighborhood branches serve local rentals away from airports, but operating hours and after-hours return options vary by location.
  • Delivery rentals are available in selected areas and must be confirmed for the renter's address and dates.
  • One-way rentals allow a different return location when the selected route and vehicle qualify. An intercity fee may apply.

Return and Cancellation Policy

  • For U.S. Pay Now reservations, Hertz currently charges $100 when a prepaid booking is cancelled more than 24 hours before pickup and $200 when it is cancelled within 24 hours of pickup.
  • If a prepaid reservation is not cancelled before pickup and the vehicle is not collected, Hertz states that the prepaid amount is forfeited.
  • Prepaid reservations must be changed through the Modify or Cancel option on Hertz.com, and a change may alter the rental charges.
  • Review the fuel level recorded on the rental agreement and the selected fuel option before returning the vehicle. Refuelling charges depend on the agreement and return fuel level.
