Is shipping free, and how long does it take?

Can I return a SPOT device after opening it?

Yes, within 30 days, but opened hardware and activated service certificates carry a 25% restocking fee. You pay return freight and need an RMA number from Customer Care at 1-866-OK1-SPOT. After 30 days, hardware and certificates aren't refundable.

Do I have to pay a monthly fee to use SPOT?

Yes. Every device needs an active service plan to work, and plans auto-renew. Contract plans start at $11.95 a month on a 12 month term, and Flex plans start at $14.95 a month.

Where do I enter the FREEACT code?

Enter FREEACT when you activate your device and choose a service plan. It waives the $29.95 activation fee on contract plans only, and it expires 11/01/2026.

Can I combine more than one code?

SPOT doesn't publish a stacking policy. FREEACT is the only active code on its site, so there's nothing else to pair it with right now. Retailer prices are set by the retailer.

What is the Flex Charge on Flex plans?

It's a $34.95 yearly fee, paid at activation and again at each renewal even while your service is suspended. In return you can pause and restart service during the year without paying the $29.95 activation fee again.

Count your custom messages before picking an X tier
SPOT X Basic ($11.95 a month) includes 20 custom messages and charges 25¢ for each extra one. Advanced costs $8 more and includes 100. Once you send more than about 52 custom messages a month, Advanced is the cheaper plan.

Flex wins for short seasons, contract wins past seven months
On a Basic plan, the second year of Flex costs $34.95 plus $14.95 per active month. That beats $143.40 for a contract year until about the eighth month of use. In your first year, the $29.95 activation fee shifts the break-even to roughly five months.

Know what the waived fee costs if you leave early: SPOT's X contract terms say early termination means paying 100% of the remaining contract balance plus any credits issued, promotions included. Cancelling early after using FREEACT can therefore bring the $29.95 back. The Gen4 and Trace contract plans are also 12 month terms.

Add 2.5 minute tracking only when you need it: Gen4 and Trace Basic tracking starts at 5 minutes. The 2.5 minute option costs $4.95 a month, or $6.25 on Flex. Gen4 Basic plus that add-on comes to $16.90 a month.

Price the first year, not the device: With a Basic contract plan and free activation, year one comes to $273.39 for Trace, $293.39 for Gen4 and $393.39 for X. The plan costs more than the device after about a year, so compare plans first.

Shopping Guide

Pick by what you need to do, not by price: SPOT X sends and receives messages through the SPOT X app and has its own US mobile number. Gen4 sends preset check-in and custom messages and has an SOS button. Trace tracks assets and has no SOS.

Compare power and battery: Gen4 runs on 4 AAA batteries and sends about 1,250 check-in or custom messages on one lithium set. SPOT X has a rechargeable battery rated at 240 hours in 10 minute tracking mode. Trace ships with lithium AAAs and can run on USB power, but the waterproof DC cable is sold separately.

Check the coverage map for your route: SPOT uses the Globalstar network, and SOS only works inside the mapped areas. Fringe zones have the weakest signal, and international messages may cost extra. SPOT X has separate maps for outgoing-only and two-way coverage.

Match the ratings to your conditions: Gen4 is IP68 (30 minutes at 2 m), while X and Trace are IP67 (1 m for 30 minutes). Gen4 and Trace operate down to -22°F, and X down to -4°F, which matters for winter use.
